top 3 things one must learn as a peace corps-georgia volunteer
1. boil everything (for at least 3 minutes). that includes: canned/jarred veggies (i don’t quite understand how one can boil/would want to eat after boiling veggies that have been submerged in liquid for eons, but i’m sure i’ll find out very soon!); water (can’t have those wormies in your intestines!); and a number of meat products (yum!). p.s. i’ve also learned how to make my own oral re-hydration solution (1/2 t. salt, 1/2 t. baking soda, 4 T. sugar). if it doesn’t calm your stomach (when the wormies start swimming or after a vino binge), it will certainly give you a sugar high.
2. when walking past a pack of wild dogs, remain calm. it might also help to have a large rock handy, just in case.
3. host families will make a point to ask you if you are married. if you are not, it is first best to act as if you don’t understand the question. even when your georgian is good enough, avoid the question at all costs. they may have a distant relative waiting in the wings if you mention you are single.
[[of course there are a number of things we've learned so far, but these are my favorites]]
as most of you know, i really like to eat. the food here is fabulous, at least now it is. once i have to start boiling everything i’m sure that will change. if any of you have ideas on how to get rich endorsing an all bread diet, please let me know a.s.a.p. i figure 2 years is enough to get sound evidence >> eating as much bread as i possibly can.
i hope you all are enjoying the updates. if there’s anything specific you want to know please leave a comment. please also leave a comment if you know how to add a picture that i have saved on my computer as a header. these blog things are more difficult to format than i anticipated. check facebook for pictures so far…hopefully i can get an album created :]
cheers from georgia!
